Endometrial Biopsy
Endometrial biopsies are performed by Dr. Mandelman to examine the uterine lining for abnormal cells or to find the source of irregular bleeding. Endometrial biopsies usually take about 15 minutes and are performed right in our office. Patients may experience some cramping during the procedure. It may take several days for the results of the biopsy to come back from the lab.
Colposcopy
Colposcopies are typically performed after abnormal results from a pap smear test or pelvic exam. During a colposcopy, a colposcope is used to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva. If a suspicious area is found during the procedure, a biopsy may be also performed to further diagnose the abnormality. A typical procedure lasts about 20 minutes.
Suction Dilation and Curettage
Suction dilation and curettage, also known as suction D&C, is used to remove excess tissue from the uterine lining, normally to terminate a pregnancy or after a miscarriage. This procedure can also be used to remove uterine fibroids, remaining placenta after childbirth, and polyps. Suction D&C often takes place under anesthesia and patients may need to spend a few hours in the hospital before they are ready to return home.
Vulvar and Vaginal Excisional Biopsies
A vulvar or vaginal excisional biopsy may be needed by patients who have experienced abnormal test results or have irregularities in their pelvic region. During a biopsy, a sample of the abnormal tissue, or the entire area may be removed and sent to a lab for further testing.
