What is urgent care?

When something serious affects your health, urgent care is an alternative option to going to the emergency room. You should still go to the emergency room if your issue is life-threatening or if you’re bleeding profusely, but opting for urgent care for other issues can save you a lot of time in the waiting room. Plus, you don’t need to make an appointment ahead of time.

Which issues can urgent care address?

At Westlake Women’s Health Specialists’ urgent care clinic, Dr. Mandelman reviews any concerning symptoms you may have in relation to your pelvic health. If you experience burning, unusual bleeding, or pain, she can run tests and uncover the underlying cause. 

Common women’s health issues that might warrant a visit to urgent care include:

Vaginal infections

Some vaginal infections are STDs, while others, like bacterial vaginosis, are just overgrowths of the normal bacteria in your vagina. Vaginal infections may or may not come with symptoms and can be bacterial, fungal, or parasitic in nature. 

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Urinary tract infections happen when bacteria get into your urethra. The infection can affect any part of your urinary tract, including the bladder or kidneys. 

Abnormal bleeding

Abnormal bleeding is any bleeding that happens outside of your regular menstrual cycle. There is a wide variety of conditions that can cause it, some of which are very serious. Dr. Mandelman can test you for pregnancy, infections, uterine fibroids, and other possible causes. 

Pelvic pain

Pelvic pain can come from something as harmless as menstrual cramps, but very severe pelvic pain or pain that lasts for a long time could indicate a more serious condition like interstitial cystitis, infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, and other diseases. 

Which services can I get during an urgent care visit?

At your gynecological urgent care visit, the friendly staff greets you right away. They ask for information about your symptoms and any concerns that led to your visit. They also take your vitals. 

Dr. Mandelman talks with you briefly before performing an examination. In an effort to make a diagnosis, she might offer you one or more of these tests:

• Pelvic exam
• Pap smear
• Pregnancy test
• STD testing
• Urinalysis
• Complete blood count

It might take a couple of days to get the results of your lab tests back. As soon as they’re available, Dr. Mandelman reviews them with you. Then, she goes over treatment options. For example, you may need to take a round of antibiotics to relieve a urinary tract infection, bacterial vaginosis, or a sexually transmitted disease.
